i'm back! a recap of the past few weeks.

I DID IT! Dopey Challenge Complete!

Hi guys! Just wanted to write a post and apologize for my absence. I've been a busy lady these past two weeks, and honestly, writing up blog posts was the last thing on my mind, and I'm ok with that. I had such a great time meeting up with friends, and making some new ones, along with all of the fun races.

Anyway, I am back and hope to play catch up the remainder of the month with blog posts and reading all of my friends posts as well. Hope you have all been great and have been having some wonderful runs and races.

Here's a little recap of the past few weeks since my last week in review December 22–28.

Dopey Challenge Training: Week 27

Monday, December 29rest day

Tuesday, December 30: rest day

Wednesday, December 31: rest day

Thursday, January 1: rest day

Friday, January 2: rest day

Saturday, January 3rest day

Sunday, January 4: hike at Bullfrog Lake in the snow

Weekly mileage: 0 miles
Total mileage for Dopey Challenge Training: 370.26 miles

So, I was still battling the cough and sinus infection this week and just continued to rest/sleep the best I could. I figured at this point it was the best thing I could do for myself before the big races in Florida. On Wednesday we had a wedding to celebrate, along with NYE, so that was really fun, though a late evening. January 1 we went to my in-laws to hang out with the family and my sister-in-law and her family for the last time before they headed back home to AZ.

Other than that, not much to report. I started to get my gear and packing list ready for the next week.

Dopey Challenge Training (RACE WEEK): Week 28

Monday, January 5rest day

Tuesday, January 6 fly to Orlando!

Wednesday, January 7: WDW Expo

Thursday, January 8: WDW 5K (3.21 miles)

Friday, January 9: WDW 10K (6.34 miles)

Saturday, January 10WDW Half Marathon (13.35 miles)

Sunday, January 11: WDW Marathon (26.84 miles)

Weekly mileage: 49.74 miles
Total mileage for Dopey Challenge Training: 420 miles

What a whirlwind of a week! It snowed the night before we left, and a little in the morning, so I was concerned with getting out on time, but other than having to wait for our pilots/crew from another flight, there weren't any other issues. We left about 30 minutes late, but were only about 10 minutes late landing thanks to some tailwind. We checked in to the hotel, unpacked a little, and headed to Magic Kingdom for some rides and fun.

Fun at Animal Kingdom.

On Wednesday I woke up early to sign up for the NB Virtual Queue and then hit up the expo when it opened so I could ensure I got the Dopey merchandise that I wanted in the correct size. It was a bit of a madhouse, but I managed to get everything I had my eye on. I'll speak more in detail about the expo in another post, and each race will probably also get their own post as well.

I will say that the Dopey Challenge was very tough, but very rewarding. There were tears, as predicted, for many reasons – pain, exhaustion, relief, pride. Basically, there were a whole lot emotions running through me the entire race. I still can't believe that it's over! All the hard work and 29 weeks of training DONE. It's like... now what?! Haha. I actually have a half marathon this upcoming Saturday, so obviously I still have plenty on my plate, but I don't have a training schedule put in place yet, so that's weird. It was something on my calendar that I followed almost religiously, so to not have that feels like something is missing.

Dopey Challenge Training: Week 29

Monday, January 5rest day - head to Disney Dream Cruise!

Tuesday, January 6 Nassau

Wednesday, January 7: Castaway Cay 5K (3.1 miles)

Thursday, January 8: rest day

Friday, January 9: debark, spend a lot of time at the airport, fly home

Saturday, January 10rest day

Sunday, January 11: rest day

Weekly mileage: 3.1 miles
Total mileage for Dopey Challenge Training: XXX miles

The day after successfully completing the Dopey Challenge, I went on a Disney Cruise to run the Castaway Cay 5K and received the Castaway Cay Challenge medal :) I didn't have any cell service (except briefly when I turned it on in port in the Bahamas so I could email my husband) and I wasn't going to pay for internet access on the ship, hence why my week in review posts have been missing and why I am now trying to catch up... did anyone actually miss me or my posts? Haha.

Enjoying some sun, beach, ocean, and beer at Castaway Cay.

I have other half marathons on my list for the upcoming months, and I'd really like to get a PR of under 3:00 hours, so that's my next big goal. I know it's feasible as I was getting faster throughout 2014, I just wasn't going for any times during most of my races, I was stayed with my mom and had fun with her for most of them.

Time to start getting together my next training plan. I think my goal race will be a local half in the beginning of May. It's a fairly flat course with an out and back, so as long as the weather isn't too warm, I think it's the perfect race to set my sights on.

Dopey Challenge Training: Week 26

Monday, December 15rest day

Tuesday, December 16: rest day

Wednesday, December 17: rest day

Thursday, December 18: rest day

Friday, December 19: 15 minute walk with dogs

Saturday, December 20rest day

Sunday, December 21: 1.5 miles (mostly walking)

Weekly mileage: 1.5 miles
Total mileage for Dopey Challenge Training: 370.26 miles

Still not much running in my world, as I'm still getting over being sick. There's way too much coughing going on, so there's no way I could get through a run yet. I did a short dog walk and then hit up the trail on Sunday to play with my GoPro, take some video, and did a very short 1.5 miles that consisted of mostly walking.

What I did a lot of this past week was sleep. I slept for more than 8 hours every night and it was glorious (since I actually slept rather than coughed all night - thanks NyQuil!). I unfortunately had to skip church with the family on Christmas Eve, as I was still coughing a ton and didn't have the energy to sit through that along with dinner and presents with the family. It's amazing how quickly my energy is zapped.

Anyway, I'm hoping that continuing the rest, vitamin c, and lots of sleep will continue to help me get better in time for Dopey in a week and a half. Either way, I'll be pushing through it, but it'll be more fun if I'm not still hacking up a lung ;)

I'm looking forward to ringing in the New Year with my friends at a wedding. What are your plans?

How was your week? Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and wishing you a Happy New Year in a few days :)

P.S. Make sure to review your race(s) on BibRave.com, and join us for #BibChat tomorrow night at 8pm CT.

What should have been my final hard core training for the Dopey Challenge turned into a very sick week. This means I spent all of my time at home from Monday evening after work until I got up for work this morning. My only time out of the house was to get to the doctor and to get my prescriptions at the pharmacy.

To say I am completely disappointed is a huge understatement. I'm a bit devastated, really. I was excited for my final Dopey Simulation, would should have been 4 consecutive days of running 3 miles, 5 miles, 12 miles, and 25 miles. Instead, I did nothing all week but lay on the couch coughing and unable to eat much of anything other than saltines and some soup broth. UGH. I know I'm ready for the challenge, but this final long weekend in training was going to get me there mentally as well. Now I fear I'll have respiratory issues through January and have trouble completing Dopey. I know this weekend wouldn't have done that much for me, but I was excited to get in the training and have the final push I needed to make me feel mentally and physically ready. It was just really a bummer to get so sick. I was honestly wishing I had gotten sick this week instead for Christmas... is that crazy or what?

I suppose it's better I got sick sooner rather than later (and really, it was inevitable – I get sick in the fall/winter every year, and I'm surprised it held off this long), so that I could get medication and get myself on the mend before the end of the year. Better that it was a few weeks farther away from Dopey, right? Now is the time to rest and get healthy. I know I can push through the races come race day, so getting healthy is my main priority, and trying to do the maintenance runs until then (starting this weekend – I don't forsee too much this week as I'm still having trouble with breathing and not coughing constantly).

Also, it was horrible being home for all the days, not going into work, but not having any energy to get things done around there. Boo. I don't even have my Christmas tree up yet... ahhh! If we weren't having family over on Christmas Eve, I wouldn't even bother. I still have a few more presents to get and all of the wrapping, and I haven't even ordered our New Year cards yet. Ohhhh boy, it's gonna be a long few days up ahead.

Sorry for all of the complaining, but this is life for me right now haha.

How was your week? Are you ready for the holidays? Can you believe next week are the final few days of 2014?! Bananas.

Dopey Challenge Training: Week 24

Monday, December 8rest day

Tuesday, December 9: 2.36 miles

Wednesday, December 10: rest day

Thursday, December 11: unscheduled rest day

Friday, December 1230 minute walk

Saturday, December 13: 3.47 miles

Sunday, December 14Rudolph Ramble 8k (5 miles on the Garmin)

Weekly mileage: 10.83 miles
Total mileage for Dopey Challenge Training: 368.76 miles

It was a pretty good week here on my end, with some wonderful weather here in Chicago (ok, maybe a little dreary, but temperature wise it was great!). The beginning of the week was pretty laid back, but once Thursday hit it was busy.

Tuesday and Saturday I worked on getting my new Lunarglides broken in. I always feel like my effort level for an easy run goes up about 3x when I wearing new shoes. I have trouble getting the laces just right those first few runs, and something about the stiffness of the shoe makes something that should be an easy effort seem so much harder. Luckily, I found some other people on Twitter that have the same issues, so I didn't feel so bad. I also got a few new tips/tricks to try – like putting in your old insoles into the new shoes for a few runs until they are less stiff. I'll be trying that out this week.

Thursday evening my husband and I went on our monthly wine tasting and dinner date. Friday night he met me in the city for Christkindlmarket (I discussed this in my Friday Five: Favorite Winter Activities, if you are interested in learning a little more about it). We got some delicious Gluehwein in cute souvenir mugs, then hit up Monk's for a drink and some loaded tater tots.

Saturday I managed 3.47 miles on the treadmill at the gym, and then we had a wedding in the late afternoon (ceremony) and evening (reception). After a late night of dancing and fun, I got home and tried to get my race gear ready for the AM. After a chugging of some Hoist and a serving of RECOVERYbits, I went to bed at about 2 and had to be up around 6. Eeks.

Sunday morning rolled around much quicker than I had liked. I dragged myself out of bed and got dressed for the Rudolph Ramble 8k in Lincoln Park. We did race day packet pickup (love when races have this feature!) since I was so busy at work/after work during the week. The hats were adorable, and we even got some fun foam antlers. I'll have more details when I recap the race, but it was fantastic weather and a well organized event - - super glad I decided to register for it. For now, you can check out my review on BibRave.

Rudy and I. I wish I had noticed sooner that
my antlers were lopsided.Oops.

I also had the chance to try out my GoPro for the first time (BibRave and Addaday partnered up to do a video series, and I was one of a select few Pros chosen to receive the GoPro for that reason). There are so many awesome features to try out, it will take me a while to get the hang of it all haha. I'll be working on editing a video for educational purposes.

Anyway, after the race, my mom and I wandered around the zoo for a bit, headed back towards the direction of home, had some lunch, and then I spent the day doing laundry, a bit of work, cleaning, and laying on the couch.

This week is going to be a VERY tough one. It's the LAST DOPEY SIMULATION, and it's pretty much the entire length of the races, minus a mile for most. It's mostly the last long runs before the race, too (I don't see 7 miles as being too horrible these days haha). I've got a maintenance run on Tuesday, then Thursday is a 3 mile run, Friday is 5, Saturday is 12, and Sunday is 26. I'll be honest with you – I'm not doing 26 on Sunday. I think I'll go between 22–24 depending on how I'm feeling. I've done up to 23 in training, and know that I can manage another 3.2 miles when at Disney. I think it's more important to stay healthy and injury free, so that's what I'll be focusing on most when I go out Sunday. I'm hoping for decent weather. Currently it's looking like it should be in the low 30s, which is good enough for me. Please send good vibes my way this week!

Just a few shots of me with my Clif Bar products.
Have you tried the Iced Gingerbread? Amazing.

Something else exciting (is the Dopey simulation exciting?!... probably not haha) this week is that BibRave is doing a 5-day Stocking Stuffer Gift Guide sponsored by Zensah. Monday through Friday this week, they are featuring a BibRave Pro and one of their favorite running-related item. I was featured today for my favorite fuel – Clif Bars. Check it out on Twitter and Instagram, and keep an eye out each day for the new featured Pro :) On Friday I plan on doing a little review of the guide, so stay tuned!
