be open: trekz titanium mini review

Disclaimer: I received the Aftershokz Trekz Titanium Mini to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

I need music while running. When I'm tired or bored with my run, I need that extra motivation or power song to keep me moving. What's not great about needing music? Finding the right pair of headphones.

When I first started running, I used wired earbuds. It was hard to find a pair that would stay in my ear. And the dang wire was such a pain – I didn't love having to weave it under my shirt so that I didn't have to deal with the bouncing, and then worry about how my sweat will ruin them. Then there was the whole not being able to hear your surroundings as well as you'd like.

Eventually I had a good enough phone that allowed bluetooth headphones, but then I had similar problems – finding the right pair that would stay on my head or in my ears, but blocking my ears from surrounding noises. Being able to hear traffic, cyclists, other runners is an important part of safety on the run. It can help prevent accidents

In comes Aftershokz. They are a company that makes headphones using bone conduction technology with an open ear design, so you aren't blocking your ears from hearing your surroundings. Time to end the compromise of your safety while running with music.

A great example of needing these headphones: I ran the Soldier Field 10 Mile yesterday. Half of the race takes place on the Lake Front Path, which is open to the public; not just the race. It's a large race with maybe 10,000 runners. Which means a lot of people running on the left side of the path... blocking cyclists or other runners not racing. I heard a lot of cyclists saying 'Left' (which not all of them do), and saw most people move, except these two guys. They had on wired headphones, and apparently listening to music too loud to hear everyone shouting 'Left' (including runners trying to help the other runners move out of the way and prevent any accidents). I told my mom – they could really benefit from the Aftershokz headphones, because I heard all of the cyclists just fine (though I never run on the left except to pass others, but when I can I move right back over to the right, per running etiquette).

Anyway, these headphones are AMAZING. I wear them on every. single. run. I wrote about them last year and you can read my original review here or my review of the Pink campaign they ran last October (where they were donating parts of the proceeds of their Trekz Titanium Pink headphones + extra through social media hashtags being used).

Why did I want to try the Aftershokz Trekz Mini if I loved the originals so much? I have a small head. I can wear children sized hats better than adult sized. Most adult sized hats I have to snap at the smallest snap, which leaves a huge amount of that plastic part hanging out. Anyway, I thought it might be nice not to have so much of the headphone connecting part hanging in the back. It never bothered me too much, but sometimes when I wore my 1 bottle pack, the back part would hit the bottle or get caught if I moved my head a certain way.

I love the Mini size so much! They are perfect for my smaller head size, I get the same great sound, and I'm not compromising my safety by blocking my ears from the outside world. They are easy to pair out of the box.

I was so excited to test them when they arrived I forgot to charge, and during my run they gave me a warning to charge. That's nice addition to have – a reminder when they need to be charged. If you've used out the battery, they take about 1.5 hour to fully charge back up. I think I charge mine twice a week – at the beginning and then before my long run. Probably more than it needs, but I like to be safe. If music stops during my run... so do I haha.

You can also see the battery life on your phone up in the right hand corner with all of your other stats (bluetooth connected, phone battery), and you can even press the volume button when no music is playing to see what level the battery is (high, medium, low). Changing songs is easy, just hit the left ear button twice, once to pause/play, and the volume controls are small buttons on the right side behind the ear. You can find user instructions here. They have a battery life of about 6 hours (I've gotten a little over 6 at about 6:15 or 6:30 myself, which was awesome for this slower marathoner). It doesn't drain my phone battery too much either. I am able to go 6+ hours using the headphones/music + sending texts and GPS apps on my phone and still have about 50% when I am done. Granted, I have a newer iPhone which has better battery life, but even with my older iPhone I never had problems with it dying on my long runs/races.

They are lightweight with no bounce and comfortable. I barely notice them when I'm running. I also wear sunglasses and hat/visors most runs. I put on the headphones, then the hat/visor then the sunglasses. I found this strategy to work well.

They are water resistant, but not waterproof, so don't submerge them in water. If it's a light rain, you're good to go, but I'd say if it's a downpour and you'll get drenched, maybe leave them inside. Use your best judgement. I will say I am a sweaty runner, and have wore them in lighter rains and haven't had any problems.

You can check if the Afterhokz Trekz Mini or the original size would be a better fit for you using their Size Guide.

Aftershokz has great customer service along with a fun social media presence. Their twitter gif game is on point. They are very active and always responding to questions or celebrating you and your run. It's really cool.

The Aftershokz Trekz Mini come in pink or slate and cost $129.95. Well worth the price. Comparable to other bluetooth running headphones and they are safer to wear out and about because you can hear your surroundings. You can even get a free water bottle (those cool insulated ones) if you order through this link: http://bibrave.aftershokz.com/

on wednesdays we wear pink: aftershokz trekz titanium pink

Disclaimer: I received Aftershokz Trekz Titanium Pink to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

If you follow me on Instagram, you may notice that I always wear my Aftershokz Trekz Titanium for running outside. The open ear bone conduction allows for me to hear my surroundings – so no sneak attack by cars, cyclists, or other runners. I'm aware of what's happening around me, which is much safer than using in ear headphones.

Now, to go along with my Ivy pair, I also have a pink pair (LOVE). You can read my review of the Ivy Trekz Titanium here. This blog post isn't a review, but about the campaign that Aftershokz is launching tomorrow that'll go from September 1–October 31, 2016! And let's really just say it - I now wear pink everyday ;)

With October right around the corner, AfterShokz is joining the fight against breast and ovarian cancer by going (Bright) Pink! Our limited edition open ear Trekz Titanium Pink headphones are designed to keep you aware, but in more than one way.

For every unit sold on aftershokz.com from September 1st to October 31st, 2016, AfterShokz will donate 25% of proceeds to Bright Pink, a non-profit that focuses on breast and ovarian cancer awareness and action.

Plus, every time #AwareWithPink is used on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, AfterShokz will donate an additional 25 cents to Bright Pink to extend the awareness. Spreading the hashtag will fund Bright Pink’s ongoing efforts to educate and drive awareness about how being proactive can make all the difference (up to 10,000 uses). So please, spread some awareness by using the hashtag #AwareWithPink.

THE FACTS:
1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
1 in 67 women will develop ovarian cancer.
2 in 3 women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer will die.
>92% is the 5 year survival rate when breast and ovarian cancer is detected.

That's why turning awareness into action could save your life.

I'm sure you can relate to some of these statistics. Just about everyone knows someone that has been affected by breast cancer. My aunt died before I was born from breast cancer. My mother-in-law is a breast cancer survivor. She also was the manager of a breast health care clinic and now is an advocate for those diagnosed with breast cancer / breast cancer survivors. I know she spends hours on the phone talking with those affected by this disease and helping families get through treatments. Having gone through it, I know she can offer great advice and can help women and their families navigate the tricky waters after diagnosis.

So what's something you can do? Give yourself monthly exams at home. See your health care provider. Early diagnosis is key and can be the difference between life and death.

What else can you do? Buy a pair of Trekz Titanium Pink. Afterhokz donates 25% of each unit to Be Bright Pink – they help educate and are shifting the focus from general awareness to that critical next step — proactive, life-saving action.

Key facts and benefits about the product:
  • Trekz Titanium Pink are a limited-edition offering designed to keep you aware in more than one way. The open ear design of these hot pink headphones will keep you aware of your surroundings while you enjoy your music and calls, and a portion of proceeds raised from each unit sold will go back to Bright Pink to spread awareness about breast and ovarian cancer.

  • Trekz Titanium Pink are wireless, sweat resistant and perfect for fitness enthusiasts. They don’t go inside or over your ears, so you don’t need to worry about them falling out mid-workout!

  • You can make and take calls, enjoy music or podcasts on the go with Trekz Titanium Pink (all while looking great)! You’ve got the perfect workout partner with Trekz Titanium Pink, and they’ll keep you company for 6+ hours without needing a charge (that’s more than we can say for most workout buddies) ;)

  • You no longer have to choose between listening to Beyoncé or your running partner. With Trekz Titanium Pink, you can enjoy the company of both, since these headphones don’t go inside or over your ears and block out your environment or conversations!

  • Trekz Titanium Pink are super flexible and lightweight with their titanium frame, and they’ll stay in place, no matter what you put them through. Handstands? Backflips? No problem!

  • Trekz Titanium Pink are IP55 rated - which technically means you can hose them down and they’ll survive. Don’t go swimming with them, but rain and excessive sweat won’t do damage!

How to wear:
  • The transducers rest on the cheekbones, in front of the ears. The frame should loop over the ears, with the band resting behind the head, close to the neck.

  • The Fitbands are the two small rubber loops included in the accessory bag, intended to offer a more secure or comfortable fit for some users. They slide over the transducers, and rest mid-arm on the frame, with the flap facing up.
(I have a smaller head, but have never had to use these, but definitely something to try if you feel you need a more secure fit).
I sweat a TON during my summer marathon training (see photo up a few paragraphs haha — and that was at night without the sun!), and these headphones have HELD UP. They are comfortable and amazing. And now, 25% of the proceeds from each unit go towards a great non-profit. BONUS: Get a free portable case for your Trekz Titanium Pink using code PINK at checkout (add the item to your cart and use apply code 'PINK' at checkout to get it free).

Even if you don't buy yourself a pair of these headphones, take the warnings seriously and make sure you are seeing your health care provider for annual check ups and to call and make an appointment if you notice anything concerning.

don't compromise your safety: aftershokz trek titanium review

Disclaimer: I received a pair of Aftershokz Trekz Titanium to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review, find, and write race reviews!

I think you all know it. I'm headphones fanatic. A hoarder. A snob, some might say. I'm a modern day, grown up Goldilocks looking for the perfect pair of headphones. This pair is too tight. This pair doesn't stay in. This pair is uncomfortable. This pair has wires. This pair is juuuuuuust right.

While I have found a great pair that are super comfy and work wonderfully at the gym, I'm always a little nervous wearing them when running outside. Music has to be very low so I can hear my surroundings. Safety is a major concern, of course. I run trails, and sometimes there are coyote and deer spottings. I'd like to be able to hear any brustling that might occur around me.

The Aftershokz Trekz Titanium wireless stereo headphones are perfect for just this setting. You see, they don't go IN your ear! They use bone conduction technology and an open ear design that allows you to be aware of your surroundings. They were designed with athletes in mind, so they are sweat proof (IP55 certified), secure, and allows you to hear your surroundings — no matter where life takes you.

Trekz Titanium are lightweight, comfortable, and are the safest alternative to traditional sport headphones and earbuds. The longest I've worn them for is 3.5 hours, but I think that's plenty long to know if they're comfortable or not. They didn't cause me any discomfort and I barely noticed them there (except for being able to hear my music, of course). They are wireless and connect to your phone using bluetooth — that might go without saying, but figured I'd mention it any way.

Red light means charging. Blue light means they are ready to go!

I've loved having them for races — so far I've done three in them (Chicago Quarter Marathon, Shamrock Shuffle, and Chi Town Half Marathon). It's great to be able to hear the announcements before/after the race and on course if there are any. It's also great because I do most races with my mom, and with these headphones it's easy to chat/listen to her without having to pause my music or take out an earbud. I can set the volume so I can hear the music when there's a lull, but also hear her if she's speaking. It's awesome.

Apparently I really liked this pose haha.

They're also great for use around the house or for doing yard work. I can listen to music, but if my husband is calling for me for whatever reason, I can still hear him. Boom.

Check out this short video that talks about the technology and design:

When I received them (the Ivy color), I immediately took out of the box to charge. The light is red when charging, and blue when charging is complete. This took about 30 minutes, though if you've used them so much they've died, it's about an 1.5 to charge (not bad at all!).

Once they were charge, I turned them on and did the pairing to my phone. This was super easy to do – I didn't even have to put them in pair mode (though according to the instructions you'll want to hold down the power for 5 seconds... I guess I did that automatically haha), just turning them on and going to my Bluetooth settings on my phone, the phone had already found the device to pair them up. I haven't had any issues connecting to my phone in all the times I've used them, which is a lot.

Flat Heather for the Chicago Quarter Marathon.

I know you can answer/end calls from them as well, but I don't really make or receive many phone calls, so can't really speak to how well that worked, though it seems easy enough.

They also came with silicon rubber bands that provide adjustability to accommodate smaller head sizes. I have a smaller head (and by small, I mean most adjustable hats can't be pulled tight enough), but haven't found a need for the bands.

I figured out the best way to get on my BUFF along with my headphones.
 Gotta keep my ears warm.

Also in the box is a pair of earplugs. Why? So you can use your headphones in environments where it is safe to block out ambient noise, such as an airplane or train.

While running I don't notice any bouncing and rarely have to adjust the headphones. They've been fantastic. I'd say my only problem with them was when it was cold out and I needed to wear a hat. I couldn't quite figure out how to wear them and still be able to cover my ears, because I couldn't fit the band under a fitted hat. Well, I finally figured out a way to wear my BUFF so the headphones would still work and fit properly, and eventually the smarts on how to wear my fitted winter hat came out too. Problem solved with a bit of quick maneuvering to get the hat or BUFF in the right spots and to headphones underneath. With the hat, I ended up just putting the headphones on over them and I could still hear the music perfectly.

Because of the back part, I couldn't get them inside my
fitted winter hat, but worked just find on the outside!

I generally had no issues with the music cutting in and out, like I have with other headphones. The rare times it had, it was brief and not annoying (I've had some headphones that for an entire run went in and out and it drove me bonkers). I do wear my Orange Mud HydraQuiver VP1 on most runs, in which I put my phone in the front chest pocket, so maybe the nearness to the headphones is partly why it's always been so awesome. When I went on walks my phone was in a jacket pocket, and they worked fine then too.

I've worn them on super windy days – can still hear just fine. I would recommend you have the volume all the way up on your phone when connected, and then you adjust the music volume on the headphones from there. If you have the volume low on your phone, then the headphones can only go up so much. That being said, I usually am able to run with them on maybe the third from the lowest setting and it's perfect (for me). I usually run where there isn't a ton of traffic or on the trails, so don't need them super high, but sometimes I up it if I'm near a busy road.

The volume is very easy to adjust while on the run - the volume buttons are on the right side, near the ear. The play/pause button is on the part that goes on you ear bone. Again, easy to use. You can also skip songs by double tapping this same button.

Aftershokz has been very active on social media, so I know if I had a question they would answer promptly. They've interacted with me a few times, and it's always appreciated when companies take the time for customer service.

They Trekz Titanium come in three colors - Ocean (blue/black), Ivy (green/black), and Slate (grey/black). They cost $129.99. Here's the user guide.

jabra sport wireless+ review: part one

Honestly, I had a hard time deciding which gif to use.
So many great choices haha. I chose this one since
it is exercise themed ;) Source.

If you're like me, you love to run while listening to music. Also, if you're like me, you have a hard time finding earphones/buds that work well with your ear. I've gone through different pairs trying to find the ones that fit just right, stay in my ear, and are comfortable, as well as needing controls for the volume and play/pause/skip functions, so I don't need to bring my phone or nano out every time I need to adjust volume or want to skip a song. I obviously also want some good sound. In walks (or maybe I should say special mail day delivers) the Jabra Sport Wireless+.

I have been a lover of the Yurbuds Inspire Talk for Women for the past year or two, but had been thinking of going wireless for a while. I was so excited when this great opportunity to test out wireless Jabras came knocking on my door.

One of the perks of being a BibRave Pro (in addition to the occasional race entry and being part of an amazing community of runners) is that sometimes I get to try out some sweet products. One such product is the Jabra Sport Wireless+. I've only had the chance to try them out twice on shorter runs, hence the 'part one' of the review. I always like to try products on short and long runs to give them the full work up. I don't think you can get a feel for a product on just one or two short runs... at least one long run is necessary.

Jabra Sport Wireless+

The eargels and clip that come in the box.

What's in the box? You get the earphones, eargels, fitclip, USB charger, and a protective bag. Also, they save music time for these is 4 hours, standby is 120 hours, and talk time is 4.5 hours. Unfortunately, these won't work for me for my marathon, since I am slow and expect 6–7 hours to finish haha. Oh well. They'll be great for the shorter long runs ;)

Anyway, so far, so good! I have to admit, that it took me a while to get them on. There are so many different eargels (7) to try, which I'm thankful for, as everyone's ears are different and I've had trouble in the past finding a comfortable pair of earbuds that stay in. I tried to figure it out on my own, but ended up going to Jabra's website and watching this video. Very helpful, even though it seems so easy haha. I felt like a dummy for having trouble in the first place.

After taking out of the box and reading the instructions, I charged them for about 2 hours until the green light stopped flashing, indicating a full charge. It was extremely easy pairing the earphones to my Nano. The earphones automatically go into pair mode the first time you turn them on, and there was even voice guidance to help you pair your earphones with your device. You need a bluetooth enabled device, then, generally, you go to settings, turn on Bluetooth (or look for a new device to pair), the name of the product comes up, click on it and voila. It mentioned entering a password, but I wasn't required to do so in my process (not to say you wouldn't have to – depends on your device).

One of my favorite Parks & Recreation episodes!

This is pretty great too. This is what I did when I
heard I would be testing out the Jabras :)

The earphones were comfortable while running and I found it easy to turn up the volume and pause. I need to check on the process for skipping songs and I'm set! I barely noticed them while running, and I really like that the wire behind the head is just that, a wire. They never felt like they weren't secure and didn't fall out at all. No bouncing (I used the Fitclip to secure the wire behind my head so it wasn't loose and flopping), which is a huge bonus in my book.

I was very happy that these are built towards US Military Rain, Shock, Sand, and Dust standards so it’s built to withstand the most intensive workout conditions. While I was out running Tuesday, it was either drizzling or Lake Michigan was spitting at me. Either way, I was happy to know my earphones wouldn't be ruined if they got a few drops on them. Hooray! It's also a bonus because I'm a sweater... big time! Take note that they ARE NOT water proof, but water resistant. They can withstand a short rain shower, but are not waterproof and cannot be submerged in fluids. If your device gets wet, it should be wiped clean of any traces of water in order to protect it from potential damage!

The sound was good to me, and I didn't notice the it going in and out, like bluetooth devices sometimes do. I think it happened twice on my second run, but didn't have any troubles on my first run. That's awesome. Who can stand the music cutting in and out constantly? Fingers crossed I have great results on my 15 miler this weekend.

You can find out more about these earphones by going to Jabra's website, where you can also purchase them for $99.99 – a decent price for wireless earphones, I'd say (especially ones, that so far, work excellently). There's also a page to find retail locations that sell them.

My one concern is that they go behind the ear. I wear sunglasses almost always when running (I get headaches from squinting... which I do even on non sunny days. I must have sensitive eyes), and am not sure how sunglasses will fit on my head if they don't have ear space to hang out. This is why multiple wears are important — my short runs were on cloudy days and I forgot to wear sunglasses. I will let you know how it goes in part two of the review.
