rundisney wine and dine half marathon weekend

You guys! It's here! One of my favorite race weekends of the year. The 2017 Wine and Dine Half Marathon will be my sixth year here, AND, it's the race that got me into running and runDisney (and honestly, Disney too – yes, I loved the movies when I was a kid, but I was too busy traveling for Irish Dancing to go to Disney as a kid, so now I'm feeling like a kid when I'm here to make up for it haha).

While I'm still sad it isn't a 5k and half marathon all in one day, with the half marathon at night (I LOVE night running. It's my favorite.), I do enjoy that there is a challenge and I can earn an extra two medals now. Now that I'm older, I really need my naps post-races with those super early morning wake up calls, so having to do that three days in a row really eats into my park time. It used to be just one day 'wasted'  – wake up early, run the 5k, nap and rest all day, run half marathon, party, sleep in Sunday, and rock out the rest of the days. Now it's wake up early, run, nap, park time, bed early. Repeat. Repeat. So I feel like I spend too much time napping rather than having fun at the parks. I'm just so tired these days haha.

Anyway, the expo starts tomorrow and I'm excited to see what all of the merchandise is; runDisney just revealed the race shirts. I really want the kids one with Figment on it! How cute. I like Mickey and all, but I wish the 5k, 10k, and half marathon shirts had just a little more variety to them. I'll make my final decision on them when I see them in person. I'm really hoping that orange is more neon than it seems, but I really like the other colors.

Expo at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex (remember to print, sign, and bring your waivers):

Check out the event guide here for all the information you need.

The courses look interesting too. Different than last year. I'm a little nervous about the 10k and half you don't get to anything good until mile 4 or so. Plus, starting so close to Magic Kingdom, but not actually running through it kind of stinks. I know this race never has, but with the course changes, and starting in a MK parking lot, it's like why not? haha. I'm really glad the 5k is back at Animal Kingdom and that the half goes through AK, Hollywood Studios, and Epcot like the good old days (though I'll be missing the dancing lights!).

Regardless of good course or bad course, runDisney races are always a ton of fun, and I'm sure this year will be no different. Who else will be here? Any fun costumes? What are you most excited for? Any social meet ups happening that I'm unaware of and should go to?

pumpkins in the park 5k this saturday!

Disclaimer: I received an entry for Pumpkins in the Park 5k to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

I can't believe we are coming to my birthday weekend! This year has been flying by. We are already past mid-October. Say what?

Anyway, my next race is on Saturday and it's my pre-race birthday fun. I ran it last year on my birthday and had a good time, so decided to come back again for 2017. I generally don't do many 5k these day unless there's a cool medal, but what draws me to this race is that it's in the afternoon (4pm start time), so I don't have to get up at 4am to get into the city for only 3.1 miles. In the afternoon, you can walk around Lincoln Park Zoo pre-race if you get there early, which I intend to do.

Some other fun things about this race:
  • Costume contest (Bring out your best costumes for this year's costume contest! This year, prizes will be awarded for the Best Original Costume and Best Group Costume. The sky's the limit, so let's see what you've got!)Individual mini pumpkin pie
  • Revolution Brewing Cross of Gold Pale Ale (for our 21 and over participants)
  • Post-race snacks
  • Multiple options for packet pickup (including race site from 1:30–3:30)
  • Kids Spooky Sprint at 2:30pm
Packet pickup information:
Fleet Feet Sports Old Town
1620 N Wells St.
Chicago, Illinois 60614
Friday, October 20, 2017: 10am to 8pm

Lincoln Park – South Fieldhouse
1650 N Stockton Drive
Chicago, Illinois
Saturday, October 21, 2017: 1:30pm to 3:30pm

Looking for plans on Saturday? Come join the fun. Use code BibRavePP17 to score a free RAM Racing branded water bottle at packet pickup.

This year's goodie bag includes a long-sleeved technical tee (purple with a bat on the front and gender specific sizes). All participants in the CLIF Kids Spooky Sprints will receive a youth t-shirt, sure to brighten up those spooky fall nights! They're pretty cute.

Are you headed there this Saturday? Dressing in costume? Let me know in the comments :)

chicago half marathon updates

Hey guys! The weekend is already flying by. Tomorrow is the Chicago Half Marathon and it looks like it's gonna be pretty rough weather-wise. Hot and humid and sunny. Woof.

Lucky for us, Chicago Half is preparing for the day and will have misting stations, along with ordering extra ice and water for us all to keep us safe. Race Guards will be on site (and racing) checking on all of the runners. They are always so awesome, and though I've never had to use them (knock on wood), I appreciate them being out there looking out for us all.

Chicago Half as updated the EAS (event alert system) and we are currently starting with a yellow flag. It's likely to jump to red, but hopefully we'll stay within the yellow/red and never jump to black (which means race cancelled). Keep an eye out at aid stations for the EAS flags so you know what's going on. You'll want to slow your pace a bit as well, so your body can cope with the higher temps and humidity. I've heard it's about 30 seconds slower per mile for every 5 degree temperature increase above 60F. So that can be 1–2 minutes tomorrow depending on what we are starting out/ending with.

Play it smart. Play it safe. Listen to your body. Drink that water (and electrolytes! Gotta replenish what we are losing through sweat). I personally am brining my own hydration pack so I can drink as much as I want/need. I'll stop at the aid stations for water to dump on my head.

I made it through Disneyland Half in 100 degrees, so I know I can finish, it just won't be my original game plan. With how training has been, I thought I might be able to PR without pushing myself too hard. I do have Chicago Marathon in two weeks, after all. Now I know there'll be no PR, and I'll just run how my body is feeling. It'll be slower, and I might have to walk more than I want, but it's about finishing upright and not exhausting myself too much.

I'm excited to see my Oiselle Volée teammates at Cowbell Corner around mile 8 or 9, and am hoping to meet up with fellow BibRave Pros Frank and Zenaida beforehand. Frank is doing the half as well, and

Tips for running in this heat:

  • Slow down your pace; about 30 seconds/mile for every 5 degrees above 60F.
  • Don't wear a hat. You lose a lot of body heat off the top of your head and covering it up will prevent this. I recommend a visor (and sunglasses to protect your eyes)
  • Dump water on your head. The evaporation helps cool you down, and it feels really good.
  • Wear light colored and loose fitting clothing. Tech material is a must in my opinion.
  • Does it look like a runner nearby you is having some issues? Give a helping hand. Ask if they are ok and if they need assistance from a Race Guard. Look out for one another.

This is a great race. I've been running it for the past... five or six years (I really need to look back and keep a record of when I did races haha). Running on Lake Shore Drive is really cool (though not very shaded... you've been warned) and since you are on wide streets, congestion with other runners is minimal. Though I am on the slow side, so maybe there is more crowding in the faster corrals, I wouldn't know haha.

During hot races, my mantra is to live to run another day. I won't go balls out and I'll be listening to my body. If it feels tired and overheated, which can happen quickly for me, or feel nauseous, I'll take it even slower. Hopefully not so slow I get put on the SAG wagon. The nice thing about this race is they keep the finish line open a little longer. You are supposed to keep a 16 minute mile pace, but if you go below it, they can push you over to the Lakefront Path and you can still finish if it's before 11:30. The party afterwards finishes at 12. They have pizza and beer at the finish line, but I know usually after this race I'm pretty hot and tired and can't stomach eating anything.

Good luck + some reminders from Chicago Half Marathon (via their Facebook page):

Be safe out there and I hope you have a great race! Remember to say hi if you see me – I'm nice, so don't be shy ;)

bucktown 5k this sunday

Disclaimer: I received an entry for Bucktown 5k to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

Another weekend, another race! Join me at the Bucktown 5k on Sunday, September 17. Some great news? Race start is at 8:30am. A little extra sleep never hurt anyone, plus, since it's a 5k, still plenty of time to grab some breakfast afterwards. There's some great places to grab food nearby, or at least some coffee. I ran last year and had a great time. You can read my recap here.

Registration is winding down, and from what I hear it's almost sold out, so register now if you're interested. You get an AMAZING, soft, snuggly Chicago flag blanket and if you use code BibRaveBT17, you'll also get a free water bottle.

You can grab your packet at Fleet Feet Old Town on Friday, September 15 from 10am – 8pm and on Saturday, September 16 from 10am – 6pm. There is no race day pickup.

Here is the course:

Get this free using code BibRaveBT17 during registration.

You can register here and then let me know that you did so we can meet up :)

run mag mile 5/10k

Disclaimer: I received an entry for Run Mag Mile 10k to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

Hey guys! Tomorrow is the Run Mag Mile 5/10k already. I can't believe it. This week has been fast paced and BUSY as all get out. I got home from California at about 1am on Wednesday (and by home I mean landed, I wasn't home, showered, in bed until after 2am. And then I had work in the morning. Woof.

Anyway, I had my days all mixed up, and I thought the race was on Sunday! Oops. I'm just using the day as a training run, though if that also means feeling good in the cool temps and setting a PR, I wouldn't hate it ;) I'll have my long run on Sunday now, so don't want to push the legs TOO much when they still need to last another 18 miles the next day ;)

Looking forward to earning this:

California was in the triple digits most days, so coming home to 60s feels so amazing. I love this weather, and if it goes into the 50s and never gets warmer till next summer, I'd be a happy camper. However, I am realistic, and know that this IS Chicago after all, and in a few days time I'm sure we'll be back up in the 80s.

Can't wait for cooler temps to wear the sweatshirt they gave out this year! Cute color, too.

Some last minute info for the race tomorrow.

Start Times:
7am for both the 10k and 5k

Where:
Grant Park - the start is on Columbus and Jackson and heads south.

Parking:
I'd recommend hitting up Spot Hero to find reasonably priced parking during the race. Usually you can get something at one of the Millenium or Grant Park garages for $20 (which, to be honest, is reasonable in this city haha - certainly better than the $35+ you'd likely pay if you don't reserve a spot first).

Finish:
The finish line is just north of Jackson and Columbus.

Course Map:

Hydration:
According to the map, there'll be water and Nuun at 4 stops for the 10k. 5k has 2.

So, who all will I be seeing there?

bucktown 5k 2017

Disclaimer: I received an entry for Bucktown 5k to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

Oops, I did it again. I just registered for another RAM Racing event. Sorry, not sorry. This year, the Bucktown 5k is offering a BLANKET! It's soft and cozy and I can't wait to get my hands on it. The design is the Chicago flag, which I guess this year is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Bucktown 5k always has some unique swag; last year it was a comfy tech sweatshirt that was also the Chicago flag. I love that light blue color, and of course Chicago, so I like that the theme is continuing.

Join me for this fun, Chicago neighborhood race on Sunday, September 17. Bonus: the race doesn't start until 8:30am, so you have a little bit of time to sleep longer. I enjoy not having to wake up at 4am myself. Plus, after the race it's the perfect time to go have some breakfast at one of the local eats (lots of great options).

Use code BibRaveBT17 during registration (right before checkout, click on the button to add a promo code/coupon) to score a free water bottle.

Hope to see you there!

run mag mile 2017 updates

Disclaimer: I received an entry for Run Mag Mile 10k to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

Run Mag Mile 2017 has undergone some changes. This race seems to be evolving a little every year; it was once the Women's Magnificent Mile Half Marathon and 5k, then switched to the Run Mag Mile Half and 5k, and for 2017, they swapped the half marathon for a 10k.

Initially, this was disappointing. You all know how much I love to run half marathons, but honestly, after doing so many + marathon trainings I was a little relieved to have a shorter race distance. Plus, the 10k was still going to get medals. I love that bling at the finish line.

Some really cool features to look forward to:
  • Post-race brunch! What runner doesn't love brunch?
  • Hooded, full-zip, light-weight sweatshirts for all participants (light grey for men, light blue for women)
  • Post-race libations – choice of Revolution Brewing OR a Moscow Mule
  • 10k or 5 option
  • Running on Michigan Avenue! Not a lot of races get to do this, let alone north of the river. This race takes you north to Chicago Avenue and then turns back around. Pretty cool to run down that iconic street.

Registration took longer to open this year as they finalized all the details, but it's open now and you can score yourself a free RAM racing branded water bottle using code BibRaveMM17 (add it into the coupon/promo code are at checkout). Check out the website for details and to register.

btn big 10k: last call to register

Disclaimer: I received entry for BTN Big 10k to review (and one package to give away) as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

BTN Big 10k is this Sunday, July 23! I am registered for the 10k for my second year running this race. I loved this race – it was a great course and awesome tailgate party, but also it’s because of the crowd. Everyone was there having such a great time, and it can’t help but make you feel great too. I also got to hang out with some of my favorite people.

The fantastic thing about this race is that the post-race tailgate is bumping. Since I’m on the slower end, by the time I finish at most other races, the party is usually winding down and a lot of folks have left. Not this race – everyone hangs out playing games, eating, drinking, socializing, and hanging out at their school tents.

Can't wait to see this girl this weekend!

You can read my recap here and my BibRave review here from the 2016 event.

Registration is still open! Don’t miss your chance to run this fun race. Honestly, I’m not even a huge college sports fan, but I enjoy this race a lot. Registration will be closing tonight, as tomorrow is the last day to grab packets (NO race day, since it’s such a huge race), so don’t wait any longer! $60 for the 10k, $50 for the adults 5k, and $25 for the kids 5k (ages 12 and under). Use code BibRaveBTN17 to snag a free water bottle.

What’s great about this race is you get to pick your Big Ten school that you want to support on race day, and you’ll get that race shirt. While usually taboo, it’s encouraged for runners to wear their race shirt on race day to support your school. It was cool to see so many different schools being supported out on the course from runners – and that despite the rivalries, it’s all in good fun and everyone gets along. It’s why runners are awesome. If you don’t want to pick a school, you can go with a BTN Fan gender-specific shirt (all shirts are gender-specific tech material).

Even the medals are school specific. Each 10k and 5k participant will receive an awesome medal, complete with school-specific magnetic coin. Look how fun they are!

Packet pickup is going on today and tomorrow at Fleet Feet Old Town (1620 N Wells) till 8pm today and 10am–6pm tomorrow. Remember to have your bib confirmation email ready to go (you don’t even need to print it – just have it flagged in your email or add the QR code to Apple Wallet if you use an iPhone. Volunteers will scan the QR code for a quick and easy pickup.

Can’t make it to pickup? Have a friend or family grab it for you. Forward them your bib confirmation email with a line up top stating you are giving (name) permission to pick up your packet.

I’m also very happy to see that Revolution is the beer this year! Always great to have a local craft brewery vs non-local big name brand (you know who I mean). If you know me at all, you know that craft beer is important to me, and I want the race I support to have a good beer waiting for me at the finish line :)

BibRave Pros from 2016 BTN Big 10k pre-race. Frank, Angie, me.

Fan Fest & Tailgate features:

  • Mascots and cheerleaders from Big Ten schools
  • Interactive football and tailgate games, hosted by Chicago Sport & Social Club
  • Post-race snacks and hydration from CLIF and nuun
  • A free sausage from Sausages by Amylu and beer provided by Revolution Brewing (21+ registrants only) for all registered participants
  • Additional drinks and grilled food for purchase
  • Recovery gear and race rehab services provided by Aligned Modern Health
  • Tons of great prizes, including Big Ten Football Championship tickets and contests hosted by MB Financial Bank
  • BTN on-air talent and former Big Ten player appearances

I'll be wearing the same thing this year haha.

So – who am I going to see on Sunday? I’ve got a lot of folks I need to keep an eye out for. You’ll find me in a BibRave orange tank top and a blue sparkle athletic skirt – I-L-L-I-N-I!

north shore classic half marathon & 5k: last call to register

Disclaimer: I received entry for North Shore Classic to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

Hey guys! I'm running North Shore Classic Half Marathon for my second year on June 4! Don't you want to run, too? My friend and fellow BibRave Pro Frank will also be there, making his grand return to the half marathon race distance after injury/recovery. The race takes place at 7am for the 5k and 7:30 for the half marathon in Highland Park. Lots of free parking in the area, and RAM even provides a nice map to point on the best places to go. I didn't have any problems last year and I always appreciate when the race provides parking information (I get anxious if I don't know the area).

There's some sweet swag in it for you including fun colored (ombre!) tank tops and a heft medal. You'll get the tank at packet pickup, but you need to complete the half marathon to earn the medal.

Registration will be closing next week. When you register, use code BibRaveNSC17 to score a free RAM Racing water bottle (you'll receive it at packet pickup). It's too late to choose packet mailing option (that closes 3 weeks prior to the event), but there are three days of packet pickup – Thursday June 1–Saturday June 3.

Packet Pickup Info:
Thursday, June 1 from 3–8pm
Fleet Feet Sports Old Town, 1620 N Wells Street, Chicago, IL 60614

Friday, June 2 from 2–6pm
Fleet Feet Sports Deerfield, 800 Waukegan Road, Deerfield, IL 60015

Saturday, June 3 from 10am–6pm
Fleet Feet Sports Deerfield, 800 Waukegan Road, Deerfield, IL 60015

I went to the Deerfield location last year and it was easy. Though a bit of a hike for me, I believe I went on Friday because I had the day off and the packet pickup for the Saturday race I had was about 30 minutes from there, so I just did them both the same day/trip. I also picked up Mark's packet last year for NSC. Anyway - ample amount of free parking in the area and it was a really nice store (I think it was pretty newly opened last year around that time too, if I'm not mistaken).

The Old Town location is convenient if you live or work in the city,  but I'm not too keen on driving into the city around rush hour and having to pay for parking (to avoid driving around looking for a spot, I always just park in that parking structure around the corner, which if you get your parking validated by FF, it's $2, which isn't bad. I'd rather pay $2 than drive around looking for a spot). I used to love FF Old Town packet pickup when I was working in the city and I just hopped on the bus to get there during my lunch break or after work. Not so easy these days, unfortunately. While I think Deerfield is farther distance, it's usually a quicker drive. So if you go on Saturday, keep an eye out for me ;)

Frank, Lisa, Mark, and myself before 2016 NSC Race.

Can't make packet pickup? Send a friend or family member – they just need your registration confirmation. Five packets per person. There is NO race day pickup.

I'll warn you - there are some hills here! Last year I went in assuming it was pretty flat, and was sorely mistaken. Literally - hills make me sore haha... and tired. No one mentioned that there would be hills, and I just figured being near Chicago there wouldn't be much incline/decline, and there was. I don't mind hills, as long as I'm aware of them ahead of time. I think there might have been one or two really killer ones, but the rest were fairly tame, I guess. I just remember thinking last year how horrible there were. Again, pretty sure this was because they were completely unexpected, so every hill I encountered I was like 'again?!'.

It's a really nice, scenic course through Highland Park, and there was some cheering from the residents as we ran by. You can read my BibRave Review here or check out my blog recap here of the 2016 race (it was my first weekend of 2016 where I ran a half marathon on both Saturday and Sunday, which I repeated in September).

Yesterday I wrote a bit about the Solider Field 10 Mile race and included some links to my reviews of the past few years. Thanks to Facebook Memories, I saw that 2014 was my first year running it, so this will be my fourth year. It has been confirmed haha.

Registration is still open, so head on over here and use code BibRaveSF1017 for this free water bottle.

Most of this information can also be found in the Participant Guide.

Packet pickup begins today at Fleet Feet Old Town from 3pm till 8pm and then Thursday and Friday from 10am till 8pm. There is NO race day packet pickup (this is a huge race, so that makes sense), so be sure to get to FF Old Town to grab yours. You can have a friend or family member grab it for you, if you are unable to attend – they just need a copy of your registration confirmation. Fave packets per person max. They had offered $15 packet mailing, but you would have needed to sign up for that three weeks (or more) prior to the race. Something to think about next year (or for other RAM Racing events). Note that they also had a packet pickup day at FF Deerfield on Thursday May 18 from 3–6pm and at FITT-RX on Saturday May 20 from 10am–3pm. They do a pretty good job of offering multiple days and times, which is appreciated.

The race takes place on May 27 at Soldier Field (duh) with multiple waves – red, blue, and white. Starting time is at 7am, but each wave will take some time to get through. I didn't start until 7:45 last year (last wave). They recommend an arrival time of 6am and getting into your corrals between 6am and 6:45am.

Here's a map of the post-race party and corral staging. Post-race party begins at 8:30am (says inside Soldier Field, but the map shows it is on the outside grass) and will include music, food, and beer. Open to the public.

It looks like the starting line-up area is different than previous years, in which a lot of the line up, at least for the last wave, was on Waldron Dr. Here's the Course Map:

There will be gear check opening at 5:30am and closing promptly at 11am. It will be located in the Stadium and you'll want to enter through Gate 0. Only registered participants can enter the gear check area, and your bib must be clearly visible. All bags will be searched prior to entry into this area and you MUST use the 12"x18" clear plastic bag and beaded luggage tie provided to you during packet pickup.

Aid stations will be stocked with water and Nuun. Port-o-johns will be located at the start/finish area and at the aid stations. Looking at the map, it looks like there will be 5 aid stations located around miles 1.75, 3.5, 5.25, 6.75, and 8.75 (these are just my guesses looking at the map, but gives you sense). Plenty for a 10 mile race.

Pacers:
As an added benefit to the participants of the Fleet Feet Sports Soldier Field 10 Mile, there will be event pace groups lead by the experienced Chicago Endurance Sports Pace Team. The Pace Team provides even splits and camaraderie amongst runners striving to reach similar goals. These pacers support a wide range of runners, from those finishing their first 10 mile race to those who are looking for a new PR. Pace groups will be available at the following paces per mile: 7:30, 8:00, 8:30, 9:00, 9:30, 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, 11:30 and 15:00. In addition, we will offer three pace groups that will do a combination of running and walking. The first will be at a 11:30 run pace (5min run/1min walk). The second is at a 12 minute run pace (5min run/1min walk). The third will be at a 12:30 pace (4min run/2min walk). Parking:
Volunteers, participants and spectators can park in the Waldron Garage and South Lot starting at 3:30am or the North Garage, starting at 4:30am. Entrances are marked on the Parking Map. Follow the direction of parking officials. Parking is complimentary until 7:30am or once the lots are full, whichever occurs first. Should lots fill before 7:30am, vehicles will be directed to remote parking locations. After 7:30am, normal parking rates apply; payment will be required as you enter. In order to ensure that you have a relaxed and enjoyable experience race morning, please plan to arrive at Soldier Field no later than 6:00am. The address of Soldier Field is 1410 S Museum Campus Drive, Chicago, IL 60605.

After the race, look for your FREE race photos. You'll receive an email with your free pictures that you can share on Facebook, Twitter, or download/print it. Gotta love free photos!

Charities:
Soldier Field 10 Mile is proud to support Folds of Honor as our national charity, and SALUTE, INC. as the local charity of the Soldier Field 10 Mile!

Folds of Honor
Since 2007, Folds of Honor has pursued their mission to stand in the financial gap of the more than one million dependents adversely affected by war, providing educational scholarships to the children and spouses of those killed or disabled while serving our nation. They strive to embody the words of their motto: Honor Their Sacrifice. Educate Their Legacy.

Their logo embodies the heavy price our troops pay for the freedoms we hold dear. Yet it’s also a symbol of hope, representing the enduring ideals that make this country a beacon of democracy. The 13 folds in a flag presented at a military funeral honor the sacrifice of America’s heroes, while giving hope to the bearers of their legacy. This folded flag is a constant reminder of those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. It inspires us to help equip and educate their loved ones in need of our support.
